A Fair Few Links

It’s happened again. But first…a bit of fun at this years’ Proms.

Doctor Who: Trouble at the Albert
Proms 2010

Now, I have a whole bunch of tabs open that I’ve been storing up to post here. So, let’s get started, shall we?

  • Remember how Neil Gaiman is writing an episode of Doctor Who Season 6? Well, Matt Smith has read it…and he says, “Oh, lord!” Um…is it season 6 yet? If you would like to see a bit of the script that hasn’t made it to the final draft, look here.
  • I’m sort of sad that I didn’t have a Doctor Who-themed wedding like these folks did. (If you’re curious, my wedding had a bit of LOTR to it, with a dash of Babylon 5.)
  • So…ever hear about the infamous naked pictures Katy Manning (Third Doctor Companion Jo Grant) took with a Dalek? (If you ask here about them she says, “It was the 70s, darling.”) Well…it’s NSFW, but you can see one here.
  • It seems that Starz has released a bit more information about Torchwood: The New World. Check it out here. I’ll admit to being curious…
  • Go Daleks! They’ve been voted the greatest Sci-fi monsters of all time. (Have any of the other monsters gone missing recently? Perhaps they’ve been exterminated.)
  • Look for the Doctor Who-related dates on this Sci-fi timeline. Or…just browse the thing and look for your most obscure fandom.

From the Script: The Doctor Dances

Posted by: Whochick

unknown

Recently, I was re-reading the script for The Doctor Dances by Steven Moffat (in my copy of The Shooting Scripts), and I came across a bit of stage direction that I thought might amuse you. So…here you go:

23 INT. STOREROOM night

- and from the radio comes ‘Moonlight Serenade’. ROSE smiles, THE DOCTOR looks at her curiously.

ROSE (shrugs, a little embarrassed)
Our song.

The Doctor’s face. The tiniest blink, the tiniest flicker; you’d have to be fast to spot it. If you did, you’d think maybe the Doctor doesn’t like this…”

There you go. Now, if only they would come out with the Shooting Scripts for series 2. Sigh. Doesn’t look like there will be much chance of that right now.

Book Review: Doctor Who – The Shooting Scripts

Posted by: Whochick

The Shooting Scripts

Doctor Who: The Shooting Scripts contains the almost final scripts for the episodes from series one of the new Doctor Who. I wish that they would publish a book of the scripts for series two through four, as this one is just fabulous. Each episode’s script is accompanied by an introduction by the author of that episode. Sometimes, this gives the reader some background on where the idea for the episode came from or information on previous versions. For example, the Dalek wasn’t always in “Dalek.” There was some question about the rights to use the character while the scriptwriter was busy writing the script. Okay, I just love this book. I love being able to read the stage directions as they give just a bit of extra insight into the episode. The couple of scenes that are in the script, but didn’t make it into the final cut of the episode, are a little window into what might have been. The pictures that accompany the scripts really add to the fun. I want more. Actually, while we’re dreaming big, I want the Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures scripts too.

Script Excerpt: Rose

Posted by: Whochick

unknown

Now that we are headed into the year with only Doctor Who specials, I thought that it might be fun to post some interesting stage directions from the beginning of the new show. Gotta love those extra character insights. So, I’m starting today with a bit from the beginning of “Rose.” Enjoy!

From Doctor Who: The Shooting Scripts, Episode 1.1 – Rose (by Russell T. Davies):

2. INT Rose’s Bedroom Day 1 0730

CU a black, square alarm clock. A hand slams it off. ROSE TYLER sits up in bed, gathers herself for a second. She’s 19, her bedroom’s a mess, she’s got another bloody day at work, and she’s so much better than this. Ho hum. Deep breath, and Rose throws the quilt off.”
