Mega Con 2011

Posted by: Dr. Geek

Last weekend my wife and I attended Mega Con 2011 in Orlando Florida. This was sort of a spur of the moment thing. Neither of us was familiar with this convention and did not know exactly what to expect. While no means as large as Comic-Con or Dragoncon, there was a sizable turnout for Mega Con. We were both impressed with the Orlando convention center. Now that building is MEGA. There were three different conventions, Mega Con, Disney awards \ executives, Mary Kay (one on each floor) going on at the same time, and you would never have known it. While that may be impressive by itself, what I could not believe is the fact that the three large conventions where all using just the West side of the building. With all the activity, you got the sense that you were in for an exciting experience.

Mega Con is more like Comic-con, with its list of media guests than the more fan run BayCon in California, but unlike other conventions I have attended in the past, Mega Con had a strong Anime focus as demonstrated by the large number of people dressed as Anime characters. In fact, while I can report seeing people dressed as The 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 10th and 11th Doctors, there were more people dressed as characters from Disney’s Tangled, and I never saw anyone representing Stargate. Surely this is the first sign that I am getting old. My enjoyment of “Lobby Con” was actually affected by the fact that for a while there I sat there unable to recognize what the people was suppose to be. That said, the care and detail put into those hall costumes was as good as any other con I have attended.

The media guests were enjoyable as always, given scheduling restraints, we were not able to see everyone but that is not something new. The highlights were William Shatner, and John Schneider. Both men could command the room and had very entertaining stories to tell. I knew Trek fans were dedicated but you have seen nothing till you run into a dedicated John Schneider fan. I am almost positive this one lady had her signed copy of Teen Beat in her purse since 1979. :)

Overall the con was a lot of fun, and I think we will return next year if schedules permit.

Doctor Who in America

Posted by: Dr. Geek

No it is not that crazy American production that keeps being rumored about every few years. According to this article, the current production team is actually going to be filming in the United States!

Okay so this big news, because although Doctor Who stories have very rarely been set in the USA, with the exception of the BBC-FOX 8th Doctor Telemovie, the production has never filmed here. For me, the big question is not why did it take so long, but why Utah? I guess one answer is after filming in every gravel pit in the UK, they needed someplace that could stand in for an alien planet, and the Salt Lake could do that, but I think there is something special about Utah. After all, the new series episode “Dalek” took place in Utah.

What do you think? Why of all the locations did they pick Utah?

As a bonus question – besides the 8th Doctor Telemovie which USA locations were seen or at least teased to be seen in both Classic and New Doctor Who?

Extra bonus question – which city was “The Two Doctors” originally set?

FanFicRec: Non-Linear Love Story by “Rallalon”

Posted by: Whochick

FanFicRec: Non-Linear Love Story by “Rallalon”

Story: Non-Linear Love Story
Author: rallalon
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 50227
Author’s Summary: “Come with me.” She’s worth it, he thinks. They fit so well together and she already knows how to use a fire extinguisher.
Characters/Pairings: 8/Rose, 9/Rose, 10/Rose
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: Quite simply, it’s hot. But that isn’t the only reason. Rallalon has managed to create a story that includes 8/Rose, 9/Rose, and 10/Rose in not quite the order that you’d expect. It’s a mystery and a romance. It’s character study and introspection. It’s hot sex and gentle comforting. As the title says, it’s a non-linear love story. (And on Teaspoon, you also get to read the out-takes/scenes that might have been.)

A Basis For Comparison

Posted by: Whochick

Well, as most of you know there have been ten different television-based incarnations of The Doctor (soon to be eleven). The original show ran from 1963-1989 (7 Doctors during that time), then there was an American-made film for television (loved the Doctor, thought that the film itself was not of the best quality…), and then the new series that began in 2005. Now, I’m sure that you all know that the current series is designed rather like most American television shows, in that they are about an hour in length (when you include advertisements). The Classic series wasn’t like that. One story could last up to twelve episodes (in the case of The Dalek Masterplan), with a cliff-hanger generally at the end of each one. Now, granted that the current series does include some two-parters, but it’s still not quite the same thing. So, I offer you a basis for comparison. (Yes, that would be another one of my lists, then. Oh, and for the record, I am not including multi-doctor episodes in the tally of any other than the reigning Doctor at the time.)
