This is (finally) my review of the second Doctor Who Christmas Special. Like The Christmas Invasion, it is a bit longer than a normal episode, and it is also a bit of a departure from the normal course of things. There’s a lot to talk about, so if you would like to know what I think (and see why it generally takes me 2 hours to do one of these) click on through to the other side.
 

We’re counting down the the start of this season of Doctor Who with lots of random Who goodness. It’s Day 37, and today we’re offering a review that is a look back at the last episode of season two. Interesting to note that as shown in the USA, there were a few tiny pieces missing. Seconds and interesting lines were shaved off of scenes. Luckily, the DVD set, with the British version intact, is readily available. I love this episode, and wow did it hurt me the first time through. (Okay, it actually hurts me every time.) All hail Russell T. Davies for the script and Murray Gold for the incredible music.
 

Okay, some of this news is very new…and some of it has been kicking around in tabs on my browser for a while now, but hasn’t been mentioned here yet. (At least, as far as I’ve noticed.) So, go ahead and get yourself settled with a nice cup of tea. This may take a while to get through.

Russell T. Davies himself wrote this episode. It’s fabulous. It’s equal parts silly, scary, and thought provoking. It’s also part one of two. So, let’s get to the discussion, shall we?
 

I remember putting off seeing this episode for as long as I could, as it was the only 10 & Rose one that I’d managed to miss. I wanted it to go on just a bit longer, you know. Anyway, let’s get to the discussion, shall we?
 

This episode is a change of pace for the show, featuring a monster designed by a child for a Blue Peter competition. There are lots of references to previous episodes in this one. Okay, it’s my least favorite episode of the season…but on to the discussion anyway.
 

(I found no fezes in this house…they were, however, in a shop down the way.)

Okay, I’m finally out from behind the sofa, and I just have to say that I love this episode. The music just gets me. The whole episode takes The Doctor places that you don’t normally see him go. Oh, heck. Let’s just get to the discussion, eh?
 

Ah, The Impossible Planet. I love the music in this episode so much. It sounds rather like the theme music of the Rohirrim from The Two Towers. I wonder if Murray Gold used a Hardanger fiddle, too? This episode received a rating of 4.3 from me because of that music. I also enjoyed seeing a familiar face in this episode. Shaun Parkes was excellent in The Mummy Returns. Okay then, there’s a bunch to talk about, let’s get started.
 

This is one of those Mark Gatiss episodes, and I love it. (Mark had more recently been working on the new version of Sherlock…) I really enjoyed the costuming on this one. The Doctor even did his hair and provided period-ish transport. He must like this time period. He doesn’t usually bother. Rose’s outfit was also really fun. I loved that poofy pink skirt. Well, I loved the whole pink outfit, actually. Okay, enough with the costume commentary. Let’s get started, shall we?
