Join us for a special edition podcast which features Sacha Dzuba discussing his theories about what the future of Doctor Who holds…with himself.
Over the past few weeks, there have been more news about the upcoming series of Doctor Who. So far the only thing we know for sure is that the new series will have at least 14 episodes. This is counting the next Christmas special. So really all we know is the new series will have about as many episodes as all the other normal series. However, recently former 7th Doctor and Ace actors were interviewed and they mentioned how they would like to come back to the show for the anniversary.
As you can see, there is the suggestion that past actors could come back, not as The Doctor, but as other characters, like a villain. I can see the appeal of doing this, as many of the actors do not exactly look like they use to. However, for the most part this is really on a problem for Tom and Colin Baker, the 4th and 6th Doctors. The current show has already presented the 5th Doctor, and with a little makeup, McCoy would look like he did in the TV movie. We do not know when The 8th Doctor regenerated so really there is no big problem for McGann.
Personally I think it would be great for the 7th Doctor to show up in something other than a video image.
This week, my wife, Debbie and I were guests of The Earth Station One Podcast. We were in Episode 72: Snakes, Why Did It Have To Be Snakes. As you can guess, we talked about Raiders of the Lost Ark. We had a great time, and hopefully soon, Mike and the rest of the crew will visit us here.

Let the speculation begin!
As this article states, Steven Moffat has said one of the series four major leads will die this season. But what is that you say, “But Doctor Geek, death in sci-fi is not the handicap it use to be, after all Rory died twice last year and went on to do really well.” I agree. One way this could go down, is let’s say, The Doctor is affected by something that will eventually kill him and the rest of the series is spent fighting the clock. This kinda makes sense given the few lines in the trailers, where The Doctor must trust the others without question and he acknowledges his life is in Amy’s hands. Or they could be dealing with a real death, one where the great reset button will not be pushed.
I doubt it would be The Doctor. Matt Smith is doing so well, and given the heck everyone goes through when casting the role, I doubt The BBC wants to go through that anytime soon. We have all seen River’s death, but as this series states often enough, time can be rewritten. It would be tragic if The Doctor looses her before their history is to really take off. It might be Rory or Amy but somehow I doubt it. If Amy lost Rory and remembered it this time, I think she would end her travels with The Doctor. To kill Rory would mean loosing both companions and I do not think that will happen yet.
What do you think?
Also, I just came across this wonderful new product line form Forbidden Planet. Doctor Who T-shirt Costumes. Take a look. They have a version for 4th Doctor to 7th Doctor. This would have been perfect for those long hot days at the convention but you still wanted to dress up. Neat no?
Okay, as most of our faithful readers will know a while ago, I posted this article in reaction to all the press about the upcoming Sarah Jane Adventure story in which we were to learn how the 12 regeneration limit would be lifted. It seems all the press about that SJA episode was greatly exaggerated. In fact, one could say all the hype has provided a perfect example of why details are important. If you want to know what I mean by that statement, follow me beyond the spoiler alert warning….
Hello again. Today I’m finally getting around to the second day of this meme. To do that, I need to decide on my favorite episode of the classic series. Right. No problem. Only 26 years of Who to choose from. No pressure…
Now, I think I’m going to have to go with The Five Doctors. It takes place on Gallifrey and nearly everyone is there, after all. (Well, First Doctor version 2.0 and the 4th Doctor is stuck in time…but otherwise.)
No it is not that crazy American production that keeps being rumored about every few years. According to this article, the current production team is actually going to be filming in the United States!
Okay so this big news, because although Doctor Who stories have very rarely been set in the USA, with the exception of the BBC-FOX 8th Doctor Telemovie, the production has never filmed here. For me, the big question is not why did it take so long, but why Utah? I guess one answer is after filming in every gravel pit in the UK, they needed someplace that could stand in for an alien planet, and the Salt Lake could do that, but I think there is something special about Utah. After all, the new series episode “Dalek” took place in Utah.
What do you think? Why of all the locations did they pick Utah?
As a bonus question – besides the 8th Doctor Telemovie which USA locations were seen or at least teased to be seen in both Classic and New Doctor Who?
Extra bonus question – which city was “The Two Doctors” originally set?
Whochick beat me to it. That Blastr article was going to be my post for today. Well hopefully a lot of you have had a chance to read that article. In the article it was revealed that RTD will address the regeneration limit in an upcoming SJA episode.
Okay, so given how the new show is not a reboot of Doctor Who but a continuation, I wonder what kind of retconing will be going on? What do you think RTD will come up with?
For my money I think it will be something simple. I think the limit was imposed by The Time Lords, and now that The Doctor is all alone, more or less, (Oh come on, who believes The Master is gone for good ) he can keep on regenerating as needed. After all in the episode THE FIVE DOCTORS, it is stated The Master, who had used up all his natural regeneration cycle, would be granted a new full cycle if he promised to help The Doctors in that episode. So from this we know the 12 regeneration limit can be overcome. Finally in the new series it is mentioned that during the Time War the Time Lords were resurrecting Time Lords. So apparently death is not the handicap it use to be
The only problem with the unlimited regeneration idea is that it lacks drama. What would the episode Mawdryn Undead been like if The Doctor knew he could just continue to regenerate?
