Random News and Sillysparrowness Builds a TARDIS

Posted by: Whochick

Hello again. I’ve been clearing out my email and I’ve discovered a whole bunch of newsbytes that we’ve never gotten around to posting here. (Often with hat tips to Blastr and the gang at ESO.) So…I thought I’d post them. Most recent will be at the top, so when you reach the stuff you’ve already seen, just skip right down to Sillysparrowness and the amazing TARDIS that she built. Alright?

Standby for a NewsDump!

And Finally:

NTAs, Extreme Cuteness, and Some Silliness

Posted by: Whochick

Just a few things today, but before I begin, is everybody excited for Gallifrey One?
Is anyone going to be joining me there?

  • Want to see the cutest child-sized TARDIS ever? – Well, then, go here!
  • Well, we didn’t win anything at the NTAs, but the Doctor helped out anyway. That’s just the kind of bloke he is.
  • The Doctor and a Galaxy of Stars
Featuring The Doctor and Dermot O'Leary

  • And finally, I’m issuing a “do not drink” warning for a Doctor Who/Star Wars Parody. (Actually, don’t eat either…just in case.) Thanks for the link, Gillian!

Yet another info dump…

Yet another info dump…

(I found no fezes in this house…they were, however, in a shop down the way.)

Are you sitting comfortably?

No?

That’s okay…we can wait. (And bring a blanket, it’s chilly.)

Right-o, this is the random stuff that I have open on my desktop (and trying not to duplicate what Dr. Geek has posted…)

A Responsive BBC

How to build a Dalek

I came across this article earlier this week, and I could not believe it. Apparently, back in the day, a fan contacted the BBC and requested help in their quest to build their own Dalek. This is not unusual, sci-fi fans have always wanted a piece of their favorite show, but what was so remarkable is the fact that not only did the BBC respond, they created a booklet for the fan on how to build a Dalek. All they asked was that he not sell the Daleks he made.

This blew me away, it would be like having a Trek fan in the late ’70s asking Paramount for help to build a model of the Enterprise for their Super 8 fan film and having the production team send him the plans they were using for the upcoming film.

This is even more cool when you consider that back when the BBC responded to this fan, Lucas was still selling lightsabers that more closely resembled orange flashlights than the lightsaber from his franchise. It would nearly take another ten years before a close to screen accurate prop would be commercially available.

If you want to see the official Dalek plans, visit the above linked article.

Dalek Cakes

Posted by: Whochick

For this first one, I would again like to thank Gillian for sending me the link all the way from Australia. I’d quite like a Dalek Cake.

Ultimate Dalek Cake

Well, if you don’t know where to get a Dalek Cake, why not let Blue Peter help you make one of your own? I love it when Blue Peter does Doctor Who-related crafts, don’t you? (This video also includes a couple of clips from Doctor Who a couple of seasons ago.)

Superdad Strikes Again

Dalek Halloween

Well, I can see from the various posts today, that my friend Chris scooped me on telling everyone about his latest creation. Yes, that is right, he did finish the Dalek costume for his son.

I am very impressed. This is more than a costume, it is nearly to the quality of a prop. I know I would use it to film my own Doctor Who episodes.

Has any of our other readers attempted to build their own Doctor Who prop?

Coolest Dad Ever

Posted by: Dr. Geek

My friend Chris, just had a Doctor Who themed birthday party for his son. He set it up so his son could play The Doctor and the guests were the companions. They even had a TARDIS.

Okay it was made out of cardboard, but still, Chris should get bonus points for the effort.

Has anyone else been to a Doctor Who party lately? What are you planning for Halloween?

News and Such from the Whoniverse

Doctor-Donna

Yes. It’s true. Like a naughty thing I’ve had a whole bunch of Doctor Who-related news and such like open in browser tabs for a while now. Now, I’m finally getting my act together and sharing them with you. Here we go!

If you like Doctor Who-related crafts, you might pop over to LiveJournal and check out “Merdee’s” crocheted TARDIS ornament. Yet another reason that I wish that I could crochet.

A while back, the BBC asked for questions to ask some of their team in a special panel to be held on the opening night of the Celtic Media Festival in Caernarfon. Apparently, the night was a huge success. If you live in the UK, you can go here and download a podcast of the event. If you don’t live in the UK, here is where you will find the article about the event, the UK-only podcast, and some photos. Sadly I couldn’t find a er…more accessible version of the podcast for the rest of us. If you do, will you let me know?

Advent Calendar 2008 – Days 10-15

Posted by: Whochick

And the Advent Calendar continues…

Do you have a Doctor Who Screensaver? If not, or if your current screensaver has gotten a bit old, why not try Day 10‘s Cyberman screensaver?

Day 11 brings us part 2 of Number 1, Gallows Gate Road by Rupert Laight. Can the Doctor defeat a lurking alien presence?

Think you know all there is to know about those metal monstrosities known as The Cybermen? Test your knowledge with Day 12‘s CyberQuiz.

What better way to watch The Next Doctor, than wearing Day 13‘s Cybershade Face Mask? Okay…it may make it a bit more difficult to see the screen, but it’s the principle of the thing.

Take a peek behind the scenes of The Next Doctor with WhoSpy on Day 14. Picture number four makes me wonder what Victorian “Men in Black” would wear. Hmmm…

Day 15 offers us another trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special – The Next Doctor. Oooo! It looks even better, now.
