Gally Day 2: Tropical Dalek

Posted by: Whochick

unknown

I have a few more photos, but most of them will have to wait…as it is currently 18 minutes after midnight here. But here are a few highlights from today: I almost had drinks with John Levene, John Leeson signed a dog, Filming for the Craig Ferguson show in the hall, Mars photos in 3-D (with folks from NASA), and Mr. Gumby was running the blood drive.

You Can Not Keep A Good Dalek Down

Posted by: Dr. Geek

Remember back when the new improved and supposedly pure Daleks appeared for the first time in Victory of the Daleks? In that story it looked like the last of the 2005 era Daleks had been destroyed, and we were stuck with the rather boxy I-Daleks.

Well fear not, according to this story, it looks like the 2005 Daleks will be coming back. From other articles I have read, it is not that the new Daleks are going away just that they represent more the officer corps of the Dalek army.

It is always a dangerous thing when the powers that be respond to fan reaction, after all sometimes change is a good thing even if the fan base is not with you yet, but in this case I think it is a good thing that the other Daleks are coming back. In my opinion the new ones were just too odd.

What does everyone else think?

A Responsive BBC

How to build a Dalek

I came across this article earlier this week, and I could not believe it. Apparently, back in the day, a fan contacted the BBC and requested help in their quest to build their own Dalek. This is not unusual, sci-fi fans have always wanted a piece of their favorite show, but what was so remarkable is the fact that not only did the BBC respond, they created a booklet for the fan on how to build a Dalek. All they asked was that he not sell the Daleks he made.

This blew me away, it would be like having a Trek fan in the late ’70s asking Paramount for help to build a model of the Enterprise for their Super 8 fan film and having the production team send him the plans they were using for the upcoming film.

This is even more cool when you consider that back when the BBC responded to this fan, Lucas was still selling lightsabers that more closely resembled orange flashlights than the lightsaber from his franchise. It would nearly take another ten years before a close to screen accurate prop would be commercially available.

If you want to see the official Dalek plans, visit the above linked article.

Dalek Cakes

Posted by: Whochick

For this first one, I would again like to thank Gillian for sending me the link all the way from Australia. I’d quite like a Dalek Cake.

Ultimate Dalek Cake

Well, if you don’t know where to get a Dalek Cake, why not let Blue Peter help you make one of your own? I love it when Blue Peter does Doctor Who-related crafts, don’t you? (This video also includes a couple of clips from Doctor Who a couple of seasons ago.)

Scenes from Gallifrey One 2010: Dalek Encounters

Posted by: Whochick

Hello all. I’m home again. (Got in at 2am on Tuesday morning, actually.) While I get my act together and my new computer sorted out (new computer!!) I offer you a scene from Gallifrey One 2010. This occurred while I was waiting in line for the Masquerade of Mandragora. My evil twin can be seen (and heard laughing) in the background. The cuteness is quite geeky. Enjoy…Dalek encounters. (Many thanks to barguynola for posting this on YouTube.)

Superdad Strikes Again

Dalek Halloween

Well, I can see from the various posts today, that my friend Chris scooped me on telling everyone about his latest creation. Yes, that is right, he did finish the Dalek costume for his son.

I am very impressed. This is more than a costume, it is nearly to the quality of a prop. I know I would use it to film my own Doctor Who episodes.

Has any of our other readers attempted to build their own Doctor Who prop?

When Daleks Fly

Posted by: Dr. Geek

from Remembrance of the Daleks
from Remembrance of the Daleks

Okay, so I am sure others have pointed this out, but it is my turn to have a mini rant.

The final installment of the Doctor Who Greatest Moments focused on the show’s villains. When it got to the Daleks, a lot was made of their historic first flight up the stairs.

Yes this was the first time this series showed the Daleks flying, so the scene is important as it introduces this concept to a new generation.

But for a show that has up to this point, and all points since, been aware of its own history, after all Sarah Jane Smith commented on the redecorated TARDIS, why no mention of the 7th Doctor Dalek story?

In Remembrance of the Daleks, The Doctor and Ace sought the safety of a staircase only to be surprised by the Dalek.

I guess it bothered me that in the five or so minutes the Greatest Moments went off about this there was no mention at all that it was done for the first time in the late ’80′s.
