Problem Solved???

Posted by: Dr. Geek

Whochick beat me to it. That Blastr article was going to be my post for today. Well hopefully a lot of you have had a chance to read that article. In the article it was revealed that RTD will address the regeneration limit in an upcoming SJA episode.

Okay, so given how the new show is not a reboot of Doctor Who but a continuation, I wonder what kind of retconing will be going on? What do you think RTD will come up with?

For my money I think it will be something simple. I think the limit was imposed by The Time Lords, and now that The Doctor is all alone, more or less, (Oh come on, who believes The Master is gone for good :) ) he can keep on regenerating as needed. After all in the episode THE FIVE DOCTORS, it is stated The Master, who had used up all his natural regeneration cycle, would be granted a new full cycle if he promised to help The Doctors in that episode. So from this we know the 12 regeneration limit can be overcome. Finally in the new series it is mentioned that during the Time War the Time Lords were resurrecting Time Lords. So apparently death is not the handicap it use to be :)

The only problem with the unlimited regeneration idea is that it lacks drama. What would the episode Mawdryn Undead been like if The Doctor knew he could just continue to regenerate?

BBC Archives – Doctor Who

BBC Archives – Doctor Who

So…have you ever wondered about the origins of our beloved show? Well, you can read all about it. The BBC Archives have released documents from the conceptual beginning of the show. Did you know that The Doctor’s granddaughter Susan was originally a human girl named Biddy? The BBC Science Fiction Report at the time noted that “Inherently, SF ideas are short-winded. The interest invariably lies in the activating idea and not in character drama.” …I expect that they’ve learned differently by now. The Follow Up Report was adamant that they not end up with “Bug-Eyed Monsters” and that the central characters should never be tin-robots.

Check it out for yourself. You’re sure to find something that amuses you. They even offer some photographs to browse through.

When Daleks Fly

Posted by: Dr. Geek

from Remembrance of the Daleks
from Remembrance of the Daleks

Okay, so I am sure others have pointed this out, but it is my turn to have a mini rant.

The final installment of the Doctor Who Greatest Moments focused on the show’s villains. When it got to the Daleks, a lot was made of their historic first flight up the stairs.

Yes this was the first time this series showed the Daleks flying, so the scene is important as it introduces this concept to a new generation.

But for a show that has up to this point, and all points since, been aware of its own history, after all Sarah Jane Smith commented on the redecorated TARDIS, why no mention of the 7th Doctor Dalek story?

In Remembrance of the Daleks, The Doctor and Ace sought the safety of a staircase only to be surprised by the Dalek.

I guess it bothered me that in the five or so minutes the Greatest Moments went off about this there was no mention at all that it was done for the first time in the late ’80′s.

A Bit of Fun: Bad Wolf References

Posted by: Whochick

In my surfing around the internet, I have once again encountered something of interest. Remember the Bad Wolf story arc from Series one? (The one that has occasionally appeared elsewhere after that?) Well, here is a video that covers most of the references. If you want more information about this far reaching story arc, check out the Wikipedia Article. Apparently “Bad Wolf” was added to the re-done Second Doctor Story “The Invasion.”

Actually, the one that most interests me is the poster on the wall of the vehicle from Gridlock. After the end of the last series, I suppose that we know why it was there. In any case, please enjoy this visit to the department of Backstory.

The Doctor is in

Sylvester McCoy

Hello everyone!

I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself,
I am Dr. Geek.

When I am not busy being an attorney, archaeologist, or author, yes I have a thing for professions that begin with the letter “A”, I enjoy all things Sci-Fi.

In fact, I could start my own science fiction station from my DVD collection.

I was thrilled when Whochick asked me to join The Shadow Proclamation. I have been watching Dr. Who since the early ‘80s when it was on KTEH Channel 54.

Thanks to those re-runs, “My first Doctor” was The 2nd Doctor, but “my Doctor” would be the 7th Doctor. I believe Sylvester McCoy’s performance set a tone that is echoed even in today’s 10th Doctor.

For those who are going to go into Doctor Who withdrawal, I recommend the Big Finish range of Doctor Who Audio Dramas. As they say: Classic Doctors – Brand New Adventures.
