Planet of Who?

Planet of Who?

Since it premiered in 1963, Doctor Who has had a variety of interesting episode titles. After all of this time, though a few patterns have emerged. Starting the episode title with a definite article is especially popular. Another common word is, of course, Dalek. A very frequently used format is “The *** of ***.” The word that feels to me like it appears most often, however, is “Planet.” Not too surprising, considering the nature of the show, but still. Let’s see how many episodes actually have it in the title.

Of Planets and Who:
First Doctor:
Planet of Giants
The Web Planet
The Tenth Planet

Second Doctor:
None!

Third Doctor:
Planet of the Daleks
Planet of the Spiders

Fourth Doctor:
Planet of Evil
The Pirate Planet

Fifth Doctor:
Planet of Fire

Sixth Doctor:
The Mysterious Planet

The Seventh Doctor:
None!

(I’m skipping the Eighth Doctor, as he only had the TV Movie.)

The Ninth Doctor:
None!

The Tenth Doctor:
The Impossible Planet
Planet of the Ood
and the next special – The Planet of the Dead.

Okay, let’s see what we ended up with. Only 12? Hmmm…that isn’t quite as many as I suspected. Three of the Doctors didn’t even have one episode with Planet in the title. Well I’ll have to check another word next time. In the meantime, what Planet inclusive title would you like to see in the future?

    PLANET PLUTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    And then…
Planet at the Center of the Universe (which will not be Earth and will not have any cities that remotely look British).

I’ll bet that the working title for Planet of the Time Lords will be “Song of Gallifrey.

Planet Pluto, indeed! They would have to go film in say…New Zealand? Or perhaps California? for Planet at the Center of the Universe. :)
